The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is extending the waterfowl season during the first weekend in February for hunters aged 15 and younger only. From Feb. 4-5, 2006, young hunters will be allowed to hunt wherever there is legal access, including federal refuges and state wildlife areas opened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and DFG. The normal waterfowl season will end on Jan. 29, 2006.

"We hope that parents will help their kids get involved, as junior hunters have really enjoyed this special hunt in the past. Last year's event was excellent," said Glenn Underwood of DFG's License and Revenue Branch. ?ĮTo hunt the wildlife areas and refuges, people must apply using the normal reservation system with the junior hunter's hunting license number. Hunters should use a one- or five-choice waterfowl reservation application, which are available from hunting license agents and at DFG offices. Applications to hunt on California's wildlife areas and refuges must be received by Jan.18.

"Reservations are not generally required at most areas ??? only the most popular fill," said Underwood.?ĮA non-shooting adult age 18 or older needs to accompany the junior hunter. Participants must have completed a hunter education course and possess a valid California Junior Hunting License in order to take part in the hunt. They are not required to have state or federal duck stamps.

The Northeastern California zone will not be open to junior hunters during this weekend. The Howard Slough Wildlife Area and the Sutter National Wildlife Refuge will both be closed due to consistent flooding from year to year.
