https://convictlake.com/And then there was one. This will be the last fishing report of the year. I will send out a fall derby wrap-up email, hopefully, by the end of next week. From the beginning to the end, it was a great season and some of Convict Lake biggest fish over the last 5-6 years were caught. I enjoyed writing up the report each week and can't wait to continue once the 2016 season starts up at the end April. For those die hard anglers, remember there are a few waters open year round in Mono and Inyo Counties. In Mono County the year round locations are Hot Creek, Upper Owens and the East Walker. Before heading out, make sure to check the regulations. Special regulations do apply to these locations during the winter.
Correction: Last week's "Catch of the Week" by Frank Heilman was a 9 pound 11 ounce Rainbow.
Catch of the Week: Gerard Mangan from Huntington Beach, CA with a 6 pound 9 ounce Rainbow. He caught this mammoth with yellow Powerbait while fishing along the South Shore.
Excellent Catch, Gerard!
Other notable catches this week:
Laurie Snyder from Placentia, CA landed a stout 4 pound 12 ounce Rainbow while fishing the Northwest corner of the Inlet. She hooked this big boy with Chunky Cheese Garlic Powerbait.
Jerry Emilo from Pear Blossom, CA with a huge 4 pound 9 ounce Rainbow that was caught at the Inlet. Jerry was using a black Jake's Lure.
Tom Willis from Chino Hills, CA caught a solid 3 pound 14 ounce Rainbow. Tom was using a nightcrawler at the South Shore.
Sam Hom from San Diego, CA hooked a 2 pound 9 ounce Rainbow. He landed his fish using a nightcrawler while fishing the North Shore.
Tactics/Bait: Inflated Nightcrawlers and Powerbait ended the season like they started it. They continued to be the top baits at the lake. The top Powerbait colors were Chunky Cheese and Yellow. The "Catch of the Week" was caught with a Jake's Lure at the Inlet. The other hot location this week was the South Shore.
Here is a list of other baits/lures that can be productive:
Sierra Slammers, Tasmanian Devil, green or brown Marvel Flies , Trout Teasers, Panther Martin, NeedleFish, Rooster Tails, and Bite-On Fury Shad on Powerbait.
I would suggest using some type of added attractant. Pro-Cure, Bite-On, Lip Ripperz and Berkley all make excellent attractants, which are sold at the general store.
Here is a list of recommended flies:
Dry Flies: Adams, Female Adams, Cutter's Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulators, Black/Red Ants, Sierra Bright Dot, Royal Coachman and Hoppers.
Streamers: Wooly Bugger (black, brown, olive, or green), Mutuka (black, brown, olive, or green), Hornberg, and Muddler Minnows.
Wet Flies(Nymphs): Prince Nymph, Flashback Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, Zebra Midge (red and black), Copper John (red and copper) and San Juan Worm (brown or red).
Other Resources: View our Convict Lake Fishing Map and Fishing Rig Suggestion brochures. Both brochures are available in the General Store.
Derby News: Last day of the derby is tomorrow! The Ambush at the Lake Fishing Derby ran September 7th - November 15th. We hope you didn't miss out on a chance to win $6,000 in Resort Prizes! The Morrison Bonus Cash Weekend was October 30th - November 1st and no tagged fish were caught. They'll be waiting for you next season!
Weather: Hopefully the forecast this winter includes a lot of snow!! Here is the National Weather Service link that is usually quite accurate: 7-Day Forecast Convict Lake.
