http://www.gilligansguideservice.comOk, not too bad, 30″ inches or more in some spots from the last storm. Ridging again for the next week or so and the weather and the fishing should be pretty consistent again.
Flows on the Truckee River have been hovering almost into the 600’s all week. 500 cfs today here in Hirschdale. Nice big flows once again. Good for the trouts and the bugs and the anglers. Good flows for swinging, nymphing, and floating. The water looks big, and is big, especially if you haven’t been up to the Truckee in a while. She is the river she once was, not the river you saw last year.
The water is still cold, but we’re moving closer to March and the bugs are getting a going. We will see skwala stoneflies shorty, and blue wing olive mayflies. Nymphing with those now will get the job done. Also attractor nymphs, princes and things, and crayfish are good bets too. On the streamer front, sculpins and crayfish should be in the box. Articulate if you like, or if you’re old school, a wolly bugger. Tips, or floater, hard to say, just get the fly at the level of the fish. Cover water if you’re streamer fishing. Nymphing is probably your best bet though in the cold water.
Every section of the Truckee River has water in it. From below Trout CK, in Truckee, through the Nature Conservancy East of Reno. Miles and miles of river. Get out and enjoy it.
