American Angler returned to Point Loma Sportfishing under Owner Skipper Sam Patella's helm January 5 after a 10-day open charter. The boat returned with two supercow kite fish, plus five tuna over 200 pounds.
Ray Sandoval of Long Beach was the initial angler who fought the 314-pounder, but Brian Lescar Philadelphia landed the big brute.?? Both of the anglers posed in the jackpot lineup.
John Haskin of Lemon Grove took an hour to land a 305-pound kite fish.?? John's fish was caught with the boat's gear: two sardines on 7/0 Owner hooks, 130-pound Izorline, a new Penn International 70 VSX reel and a Calstar rod.
"It was an awesome fight," said John.
Gary Sos of Spring Valley took first place for a 240-pound yellowfin that put up a "pretty brutal fight." Gary's big fish ate a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Owner hook, 130-pound Soft Steel line, an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 7460 H rod.
"He stayed up and went out," said Gary, "he was real mean."
Don Kay of San Marcos placed second for a 226-pound tuna; his best fish ever. Don fished a mackerel on a 9/0 Mustad hook, 125-pound Soft Steel Ultra line, a Penn 50 S reel modified by Reel Fix and a Seeker 6460 XXH rod modified by Reel Fix.
"I hooked up four of those good ones on our big day," remarked Don, "and I lost the first three. One of ???em was 250-plus; lost right at the gaff."
Rob Sanders of Mission Viejo placed third with a 207-pounder.
