WATCH OUT FOR DEER!
Don’t forget that jacket!
It was a ThunderBoomer kind of week and weekend and with all the rain and hail that went with those ThunderBoomers the Lake is completely full to the brim and spilling – WOO-HOO! A pretty good downpour at a rate of 3.16” a hour – but that only lasted about 15 minutes so we ended up with about a half inch of the liquid gold – sure was nice to see the trees and wildflowers get a drink.
Fishing is still on the slow side – people are catching just not quite as fast as in previous weeks – means just a little more time at the Lake. Fishing the Inlets with NightCrawlers, Jigs and MiceTails. Trolling Flashers (Dave Davis), NeedleFish, Thomas Buoyants or just a NightCrawler along the shore or over the rock piles. Just like drifting the Lake, try PowerBait or NightCrawlers by the rock piles. Pretty tough shore fishing as the water is up to the tree line in most places along the shore. Dam fishing or hoofing it back to Cookie’s Point is your best bet – might try PowerBait, NightCrawlers or tossing a Lure. Got a load of DFW fish on Wednesday.
Had a few BIG fish caught and many more memories made. The BIG fish winner this week was William Harmon a member of the Compton Hunting and Fishing Club catching a 5-1/4 beauty using a NightCrawler and a Bubble. Joe Risdall landed a 3-3/4 pounder while Gordon Tunberg caught a 3 pounder using KastMasters both had help from Frank and John Odom. Not to be outdone, Bill Wagner caught a 3-1/2 pound Rainbow using a NightCrawler. Lucy Gomez caught a 2-3/4 pounder and Matt Erny pulled in a 2-1/2 pounder both using Gulp Worms. The Gomez Family – John, Alex and Jose – caught a nice stringer of fish trolling NeedleFish and made bunches of memories.
ThunderBoomers are still in the forecast until Wednesday, then clear blue and warmer temps. The temps start in the low-70s and increase to the upper-70s by weeks end. Lows look to be the mid-40s for the entire week. Might want to pack that raingear just in case! Check www.weather.gov – enter Aspendell, CA, in the search field and scroll down a bit – I used this website for the first forecast – we’ll see which one is closer.
Keeping this info on the report:
It’s a pet peeve of mine that if you catch a big fish or a limit just to have your picture taken for the webpage and then try and give your fish away – we won’t post your picture, but then again we may post it as ‘WASTER OF A PERFECTLY GOOD FISH TO EAT’! Crimp down your barbs, take a picture on the boat and release it for another day.
Still big issues with skeeters, when using the bug juice, try not to get it on your hands – you’ll transfer it to your bait and the fish just don’t like bug juice or sunscreen or lotion or cologne or perfume. Wash your hands in the stream or Lake to get it off, and then use some fish attractant on your hands. If you’re coming to the Lake, don’t forget sunscreen and dark glasses –the snow and sun makes it pretty bright against the blue sky. DON’T FORGET THAT JACKET.
People, sure would be nice if y’all would pick up your trash when you leave. It’s really not that hard. Just sayin! If you need something to put it in, come into the store and we’ll give you a bag.
If you’re hiking stay safe out there. Remember to leave a note about your destination and approximate return time and a clothing description. And you might want to hike with a buddy. Too many search and rescues this year.
Fishing etiquette is becoming a bit of a problem at the Lake and we don’t like problems. If you come upon someone fishing, please don’t fish right next to them – take a bit of hike farther down and don’t cast over into their spot. Same at the Inlet, there are so many areas to fish on this Lake go find another ‘soon to be’ favorite spot.
Safe travels.
