Bluefin Continue Biting

"We got 40 the last trip, and 43 this trip, without much time to fish on the bluefin. They're moving along pretty good," said Independence skipper Jeff DeBuys at Pt. Loma Sportfishing June 9.

"They're not straight-lining it, they're here one day and over there the next," continued the skipper after his eight-day trip with 25 anglers and Fisherman's Hardware chartermaster Jeff Ohta.

"Things look good offshore," added DeBuys. "The water structure is good. Just be a little patient; that's the bottom line."

Joel Martin of Escondido won first place for a 36.6-pound bluefin tuna he bagged with a sardine on a 2/0 Flyliner hook, 30-pound Seaguar flourocarbon leader, 25-pound blue Izorline and 50-pound Spectra backing. He used a Saltist 30 reel and a Calstar 700 H rod, and boated his shortfin after about 20 minutes.

Dan Hall of LA tied for second place with Cesar Valdivia of Huntington Park. Both men had 36-pound yellowtail, caught on Salas 6x Jr. jigs in blue and white and scrambled eggs color respectively.

Independence was to leave again the same afternoon on a five-day trip with skipper Kyle Karcher at the helm.

Red Rooster Report June 7th, 2008

"Yesterday gave us a few chances at better size fish," wrote skipper Andy Cates. "The sharks are a pain but we managed 18 tuna for the day. Bob Cherry won the Accurate Boss reel with a 220-pound tuna and runner up was Robert Baker with a 207. All other fish were 80 to 185 pounds. So far this morning just a couple of sharks, but hopefully that will change."

The previous day Cates wrote, "Our first day in the buffer zone showed promising sign; just very few bites. After clearing the camp at noon we made our way out and saw good sign of porpoise and fish. We lost the first couple of fish, one right at color and another one that appeared to be well over 200 pounds. The only two fish we were able to hook and catch were a 201 caught by George Woodely and another about 175 by Wallace Gilkey."
