Higher flows and pretty awesome winter fishing on the Truckee River.
In fact, it was very very good this last weekend. Flows from the heavy rain went from 310 cfs, to about 2000 cfs, here in the Hirsch. 2000 k ain’t shit compared to last winter, ha ha.Timing is everything on this river, and when you time it right like on a dropping clearing river, you can crush them.
Going to be pretty mild this week and flows are back down around 900 here. Still pretty big flows, but clear and really fishy. It’s a good week to get on it. It seems like all fish have put themselves into their winter holding water. Water that is about 3-6 feet deep, slow walking pace type water. If you haven’t fished this time of year, it may take a bit to figure it out. Winter fishing is like the total opposite of summer, technique wise, fly wise, water wise, etc.
We get some big ass fish round these parts in the winter. If you’re looking for a trophy, winter and spring is kind of the time on the Truckee River.
Thanks all that came out to the streamer clinic Saturday. If you keep on the techniques and flies they catch fish on this river. You will walk away a better angler armed with more knowledge than before, no doubt in my mind. You have to think outside the box, and that’s the stuff you learn in any of my clinics.
Look for a winter clinic soon. Probably be an all day clinic and we will go over everything.
