After last weekend's relatively slow fishing, partially due to the little weather front that passed through, the fishing this week has proven to be a lot better and more stable and looks like the weather is going to be very consistent for the next 7-8 days. The weather, coupled with the season for excellent fishing should make for premier fishing for the remainder of the week and through next week.

The 1/2 Day trips on the "WESTERN PRIDE" have produced a really good mixed bag of species including Sand Bass, Calico Bass, Sheephead and some Halibut. The Barracuda seem to be creeping back into the 1/2 Day range and expectations are high for a return into the counts. The migratory Sand Bass are really showing signs of a pending bite. The big migratory bite is very close!

1/2 DAY SCHEDULE:

The "WESTERN PRIDE" has a Morning trip available on Friday at 6:00 AM and (2) trips daily this weekend and all through next week. The trips depart at 6:00 AM and 12:30 PM every day. Reservations, while not mandatory (except weekends), are highly recommended for this time of the year. If you are unable to make reservations, be sure to be at the office at least 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time of the trip. For all of the 1/2 Day trips on the "WESTERN PRIDE", come prepared (if you have it) with a 12-20 lb. rated rod and reel outfit and possibly a 20-30 lb. outfit. Bring 1/4 - 3/4 oz. sliding sinkers, 2-4 oz. torpedo sinkers, #2 and #2/0 hooks and #1 or #2 Blue/White or Blue/Chrome Jigs (these jigs are for the Barracuda, if they are around). For the migratory Sand Bass you want to have plastics, similar to "Mojo's". Davey's Locker has all of this tackle at the landing and available for purchase prior to departure, if you don't have your own.

The 3/4 Day trips on the "FREELANCE" have had the luxury of "fishing location options" for the past several days. For the most part the trips have gone to Catalina Island for really good Calico Bass fishing with decent Bonito numbers. The Bass fishing on the coast has been fairly good with occasional Barracuda, both north and south of Newport. There are also some Yellowtail making appearances, even though not they're not biting well yet. The final destination of the trips does change daily, based on day to day "fish activity". The same tackle and equipment listed above for the 1/2 Day trips is sufficient for the 3/4 Day trips, regardless of whether the trip fishes coastal or at Catalina Island.

3/4 DAY SCHEDULE:

Unfortunately, there are no 3/4 Day trips available this Friday or Saturday, due to private charters, but we do have one of our very popular LIMITED LOAD, EXTENDED, 3/4 DAY trips available on the "FREELANCE" on Sunday leaving at 6:30 AM and returning at 6:30 PM. To be safe, advanced reservations are required, even though we sometimes have a couple of spots available at time of departure. Next week we have regular 3/4 Day trips Monday through Friday, leaving at 7 AM daily. Reservations are recommended.

The Twilight trips on the "FREELANCE" have seen increased activity on Sand Bass and should see a LOT more as soon as the migratory fish show in force. Remember, the Sand Bass are excellent night-time biters and makes Twilight really fun when the Bass "get with the program" which is very near to happening. There's also the possibility of Barracuda on the Twilights. These trips depart each evening at 7 PM and return at about 12:30 AM, dependent on the fishing.

The "CALIBER" has an evening Shark trip Saturday evening leaving at 6:30 PM. The last Shark trip saw a Mako on the boat (about 75-80 lbs.), another Mako over 150 lbs. lost right at the boat, and (3) Blue Shark caught and released. This is Shark season! These trips are limited load and advanced reservations are required. The trips are usually captained by the owner of the "Caliber", Jack Lester, who is an absolute expert at Shark fishing; when they're around, he'll get 'em. Bring heavy "Tuna type" gear and wire leaders. We have wire leaders available at the office, if you're wondering.

The White Sea Bass daily limit increased to (3) per passenger this past week and some of the boats have scored those numbers the last (2) days. Additionally, there has been somewhat of a bite on Yellowtail for the Overnight boats. Our Overnight boat "Tide Change" has a trip scheduled to depart this Saturday night at 9 PM, fishing Sunday at either Catalina or San Clemente Island. They will definitely target White Sea Bass and Yellowtail and you should expect to see good Calico action during the trip. Advanced reservations are required for all of our overnight trips, so call the office to get on the list.
