The Jackson-Breckenham charter aboard the Red Rooster III with skipper Andy Cates returned to H&M Landing August 2 following a four-day trip.

"We fished on kelps the first day," said Andy, "and then went to Guadalupe Island, where we got the big fish. We fished kelps again on the last day.

"We saw a pod of four killer whales," continued Cates, "when we were near a kelp paddie, and they crushed the paddie and blew out all the dorado and yellowtail it was holding. It looked like they were catching and eating them after they spooked ???em off the weeds. There were two big ones and at least two little whales."

Randi Barfell of Alta Loma will be a freshman at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga this fall. She fished with here dad and got the trip's best fish, a 53-pound yellowfin tuna. She got the tuna on a sardine and a 2/0 Mustad 91450 hook on 40-pound Big Game line. She used a Penn 4/0 reel and a Calstar six-foot rod. "That's my best fish ever," said Randi. "He dragged me all the way around the boat. I'd do it again!"

Lou Cote of Gray Creek, B.C. won second place for a 41.2-pound yellowtail. Dwayne Dobson of Chandler, AZ won third place for a 39.3-pound yellowtail.
