April is The Peak Month

Winter steelhead fishing has improved on the Siletz after some much needed rain. The river has been high and off color for over a week but is in prime shape this week. Both bank and boat anglers are catching some nice bright fish mixed in with darker fish and some spawned out fish. Fishing should be good through the week and into the weekend as the flows continue to drop and the river has a good green color. The Siletz River is open year-round for steelhead and we should start seeing the first few summer steelhead by the end of April and the beginning of May. Anglers are catching a good mix of hatchery and wild fish.

April is the peak month for spawning steelhead, remember to use good ethics and leave spawning steelhead alone to ensure future returns. January is typically when things heat up and continue through March/April. Side drifting, bobber dogging, bobber fishing with jigs, and casting lures are all great techniques to catch winter steelhead.

The 4.0 mile bridge (aka Steel Bridge) in the Siletz gorge is open to motorized vehicles, but is only open to public vehicles on the weekend. Anglers can walk/bike in the road during the weekdays. If anglers do walk in they can park at the one mile gate and start from there.
