http://www.pacificdawn.comWe had two Calico Bass (skiff) trips this year. The first was a four day charter the last week of September. And the Second trip was a five day charter the first week of October. Both trip were very successful, and both very different. Proving you just never know what you are going to get on a trip like this. On the four day we had cool water conditions and cool foggy weather much of the time. Despite the cool water the Calico fishing was still very good. We caught and released an estimated 500 Bass mostly for 3 - 6 lbs. A very nice size average. All this with only 8 passengers.
On the 5 day trip the weather was warmer and so was the water. Almost 6 degrees warmer. And the Calico fishing was much more steady. The 9 passengers tallied over 1200 Bass all about the same grade as the trip before.
For anyone who enjoys Bass fishing these trips are an incredible adventure. Much of the fishing this year was on the top water baits . The most effective was probably the M.C Slug. How every you had to pay attention because the bite would switch to a bottom bite in the blink of an eye. So one minute all the bites would be on the surface and the next minute you would need to be on or near the bottom with a swim bait.
In years past we have had good Halibut and Seabass fishing. This year we did not, due to all the Bonito around. They made it very hard to fish for anything out side of the kelp. But it really didn't matter because of the quality of the Calico fishing.
These trips Start the end of September and run through October. They are all four and five day trips. We keep the load limited to a max. of 9 passengers, and carry 3, 14ft. Avon inflatable's. Each Avon has one crewmember and two passengers. That leaves 3 passengers to fish on the 60ft. Pacific Dawn. Not Bad.
