Trumbull Lake did well later in the day and several people told me they had a great time. Evenings starting around 6ish has been the best time to get your limit as the days are just too warm and the trout are very deep.
Starting am temperature was cool but warmed up and eventually turned quite hot for this elevation. There are some straggling mosquitoes so don't forget the Deet or your favorite repellent, they're still here. Morning temps are still unstable, but the days are very comfortable for anyone coming from lower elevation, but too hot for me as I'm very comfortable at about 64 degrees.
BUGS: Bugs galore, small midges/gnats every where on the surface, small white moths, caddis' in huge abundance. Bring all your bug stages from bottom of the lake to spinners. It's going to be a great week starting Sunday if the weather continues this pattern.
The stock truck arrived from Desert Springs and only a few "hawgs" have come out due to the warm water. Will post pix on MONDAY instead of Sunday. The California hatcheries are still having problems with the continued loss of funding for needed repairs to fulfill their obligation to provide trout for those that purchase licenses. When this will change is only up to the anglers that purchase licenses, and you ALL need to be heard. You should contact your Local Representative and CA Congressman to intervene and meet with the heads of the CA DFW. They don't listen to the businesses, only the anglers. Please make an attempt to phone or write one or both of your area Representatives.
BAIT: Crawlers, pinched crawlers, salmon eggs, rainbow garlic powerbait, garlic powerbait and occasionally a marshmallow treat.
LURES: The one and only 1/6 oz Buoyant was the best LURE for the week especially for taking Trophy Trout.
FLY AND BUBBLE: Mosquito size 14, Grey Hackle Yellow size 14, Adams Female size 14 and a few other odds and ends, but try a Renegade or Elk Hair Caddis, they are very prolific and are constantly showing up on my bedroom wall. So they are my room mates along with John. Very interesting little bugs. The weather has turned warmer during the day with cold mornings and cooling occurs every afternoon after the sun goes off the lake.
FLY RODS: Small midges are doing the best job, but a lot are being caught on streamers trailing a midge or nymph. Bring your favorites and give them a toss. Dirty doc and prince nymph has been the best, Rickard's stillwater nymph in grey size 10, or
BACKCOUNTRY: Fly and bubble using small dry flies, small lures, Red Devil, Kastmaster, Super Duper, and the never-where Hot Shot.
NOTE: If the trout bleeds don’t throw it back into the lake, it will die and IT ATTRACKS BEARS. If you care about the resource please be careful when releasing fish back into the water.
