The Truckee River is flowing around 350 to 400 CFS with some spikes due to recent storms. Water temps have dropped dramatically with cooler overnight temperatures.
Fishing has been good, with a few slower days when the weather and air temperatures drop suddenly. Brown trout are getting into their pre-spawn agitation and are very territorial right now. Streamers have been moving these aggressive fish several feet. It’s exciting to see the true predatory behavior of these fish.
White and black streamer patterns have been best, and giving the flies a lot of movement has been key. You want to trigger the aggression impulse of these fish to get them to hunt down your fly. Colder cloudy days have produced decent hatches of blue winged olives, and in shallow stretches of the river fish have been rising to them.
Nymphing has been good as well, but as we trend cooler, bug life will begin to slow down. Stoneflies are gone, but baetis are making their yearly return and have been a staple on the menu in recent days.
Flies we suggest: Carotene, Perdigon Black, Spanish Bullet, Quill Jig, Hot Spot, CDC Red Tag, Hot Cheek, Mylar Prince, Sculpzilla, Para Adams, Panty Dropper Hopper, Psycho May BWO, Olive Parachute and the One
