Red Rooster III arrived at H&M Landing December 12 after a 14-day Rod & Reel Radio trip withy 22 anglers aboard and skipper Andy Cates at the wheel. The boat had a large load of tuna that included ten cows, or tuna over 200 pounds caught at the Hurricane Bank and at the Finger Bank. Eight anglers had a cow, and regular Ben Kita of LA had a pair.
The biggest tuna was a 244.4-pounder taken by Don Norlin of Lakewood. He got it with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra. Don said he fished with an Avet 50 reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6463 XXXXH rod.
Bud Mauerhand of Paradise won second place for a 241.5-pound yellowfin he caught on a kite with a sardine bait on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He said he used 130-pound Izorline fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra on a Penn 80 reel and a five and a half-foot Calstar rod.
Jack Probert of Hesperia won third place for a 231.8-pound tuna. He told Bill Roecker it bit a sardine on a 5/0 Gorilla hook tied to 130- pound Soft Steel Triple Force line and 130-pound Line One Spectra. Jack said he used a Tiagra 50 reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6463 XXXXH rod.
Rock musician and songwriter Carl Newton of North Hollywood had a 214-pound tuna. He bagged it with a sardine under a balloon on a 7/0 Quick Rig hook on 130-pound Momoi leader and 130-pound Izorline. He fished with a Penn 50 reel and a Calstar 655 XXH rod.
Ben Kita of LA had cows of 204 and 211 pounds. He fished ???em up with sardines on 4/0 ringed Super Mutu hooks on 100-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra, with a Penn 50 W reel and a Calstar 6455 XXH rod.
Charlie Tanaka of San Francisco popped a 206-pound tuna with a sardine on a 5/0 Super Mutu hook tied to 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 100-pound Blackwater Spectra, with an Accurate 30 reel and a Calstar 7465 H rod.
Ted Kirkbride of Escondido caught a 204-pounder on a sardine and a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He said he used 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Penn 50 r4eel and a Calstar five and a half-foot rod.
Bill Walsh of Chino Hills bagged a 201-pounder on a sardine and a 6/0 VMC hook tied to 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 100-pound Big Game Spectra. He used an Avet 50 reel and "?Ķan old Seeker six-foot rod."
David Fay of LA slipped into the 200-pound club with a 200.9-pound yellowfin tuna that sucked up his sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook. David used 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Avet 30 reel and a Calstar 660 XH rod.
A 160-pound tuna was caught on 30-pound line by Mark Moffat of San Diego. Mark said he grew impatient on the Finger Bank waiting for a bite. He got it in only 20 minutes.
Red Rooster III is in port until the day after Christmas.
