Fishing has been fair on the Necanicum this past week with anglers catching some hatchery fish. The conditions are just starting to get back on the low side, but today’s storm and rain throughout the week should fix that.

It’s difficult to tell whether or not we will get enough rain to muddy up the Necanicum, but my best guess is that it will fish late this week and into the weekend, though it may be on the high side. When fishing high or colored up water, large presentations and bright colors are key. This is also a good time to break out the bait or scents for added attraction. In addition fishing techniques that keep the presentation near the bottom (drift fishing, bobber doggin’, side drifting) are a good bet. 

The Necanicum is a small, creek like, basin with good bank access along Hwy 26 and some float opportunity on the lower river. The Necanicum gets a run of early returning hatchery steelhead that peaks in late December and January, and has catch-and-release opportunities for wild steelhead through the end of March.

Due to the small size, this basin gets low and clear if there’s no rain, but is one of the first to clear after a storm.

There is a boating hazard not far upstream of the Hwy 101 take out, in the form of a large log jam, but it is passable on River Right.

Trout season will reopen on May 22, 2020.
