"Weather continues to be gorgeous, with clear skies, warm days, and a slight breeze out of the northeast. Our fishing continues to be good on 140 to 180 pound Yellowfin tuna, with a few going over 200 pounds today. We made two tanks of bait tonight, and we will give it another try tomorrow, so wish us luck."

Carl Newell On The Boat

If you'd like to see what it was like to fish with the legendary reel maker Carl Newell, here's a YouTube clip you can view for free from one of Bill Roecker's best-known videos, "Giant Wahoo," about a Newell charter aboard Excel. Randy Toussaint was the skipper back then, and he took Carl and his group on a long range tour of Alijos Rocks, The Ridge and the Southern Banks. This was the trip when Randy found the Toussaint Bank, and Newell has prominent parts in several places. He talks a bit about his theories and demonstrates chunk fishing, successfully.

You Like Trolling Close?

Long range skippers advocate pulling jigs in the propwash for wahoo, but an orca on the swimstep might be a tad close for comfort if you're aboard a 40-footer, like the gentlemen aboard this Luhrs.

What the heck was that big bull doing? Resting his chin? Thinking about using a fiberglass toothpick? Looking at his reflection in the gelcoat?

These shots have circulated a while on the Internet, and while they look like they could have been photo shopped, that seems unlikely from the number of shots and the stir they created. If the pictures are rigged, we can't tell it from here. Neither could anyone else, so far.

The story appeared in Marlin Magazine some time ago. The two shots here we judged to be the best. If you want to see more, start here:

It looks like the anglers are taking pictures. If I'd been there, I'd have been thinking about crawling into the bow bunk. That's a mite too close to be to a critter that eats whales.
