The trout season did open in the north state this last Saturday but unless you live in the immediate area most agencies prefer you stay away. Access to popular spots are limited at best. All U.S. Forest Service visitor centers, day use areas and campgrounds remain behind closed gates. (It also means these areas have been closed to the stocking trucks in case you are of a mind to park at the gate and walk in). The parking lot and the small boat ramp at Baum Lake is closed. If anyone is of a mind to visit the area it is advisable to call to check on lodging or accommodations in advance. The Forest Service closures will remain in effect until the Governor lifts the social distancing / stay at home orders.
Nearby Lassen and Plumas counties have officially issued stay away statements for those interested in visiting the areas for recreation purposes. With the realization that this virus can be transmitted by individuals who have it and don’t even know they have it, the risk to these small populated areas are too high. These regions cannot handle an outbreak with the limited medical and hospital resources should it occur.
Speaking with Gale, who is fielding phone inquiring for the U.S. Forest Service Office, Lassen National Forest in Susanville from her home location, interest in this region is high. She has fielded calls from the Bay Area, Sacramento, Southern Oregon and with the season delayed in the Eastern Sierras many from Southern California.
Hopefully we can get on the backside of this outbreak and virus threat. I along with many others are looking forward to wetting a line and visiting the Hat Creek region soon.
