I went out on the STARDUST last Sunday with a few friends to get a few rockfish for dinner. The winds were up so Capt Luke decided to got to the dome and see what was home. We picked up enough for dinner and lunch. Capt Luke told me that I should come back on Wednesday for the ling opener, after talking me into it (didn't take much convincing), I talked the others into getting sick on Wednesday and come back. He said they were going up the line to St Augustine and would be leaving the dock at 6 am. We arrived at SEA LANDING around 5:30 am and were greeted by Capt's Jason and Luke, deckhand Sal and Chef Casey were helping out getting everyone rigged up correctly. We took off at 6 am sharp and after a quick stop for some very lively sardines we were headed north. Capt Jason gave us our safety briefing and said that the conditions weren't perfect for heading north but we were gonna give it a try, it did get pretty rough on the way up. But as we got closer to the St Augustine, the winds starting to lay down and the seas were calm. We arrived at the first area and dropped anchor, we dropped down with great anticipation and were soon lifting some quality brown rockfish and reds over the rail. We moved around several times picking at the rockfish and quite a few lings of the right size and we released a lot to grow another 1/2 inch or less. The winds came up several times throughout the day and made it difficult drift the way we wanted to, Capt Jason did an outstanding job of constantly manuevering during the drifts to keep us on line. Buy the end of a very good day of fishing with a lot of great folks, we were headed home with the wind at our backs making it a really nice run home. Our final counts were Sunday 193 Rockfish for 21 anglers the jackpot went to Paul Harper, who gave it back to the crew (way to go Paul). Our final counts for the Ling opener were 18 Lingcod, 96 Rockfish, 25 Vermillion Rockfish, 3 Whitefish and 2 Cabezon. The jackpot for this trip was a 9 lb Ling, which accidently took my bait ! For an excellent day of fishing with a GREAT crew give SEA LANDING at 805-963-3564.
