The 16-day Accurate trip aboard the Qualifier 105 finished up Sunday, May 3 at Pt. Loma Sportfishing. Chartermaster Jack Nilsen, who was on the trip testing the new B-2 50 series reels with rep Allen Lemburg got the second-best qualified tuna, which made him the second-place jackpot winner.

"Conditions were decent at Hurricane Bank," said skipper Joe Crisci to dock reporter Bill Roecker, "but it got snotty at Clarion Island in the Buffer Zone. We got our tuna there off porpoise. There were sharks at both places, and at times they were pretty bad. It was about 80 degrees at the bank, and 76 degrees off Clarion."

Tim Sanderson won first place for his 215.4-pound yellowfin tuna, the only cow of the trip. He nabbed it with some stolen mojo, he said.

"He busted the old boat rod right at the gaff," said Tim about his jackpot fish. "I wasn't having any luck so I went over to Rudy, who was getting all the fish, and rubbed his shoulder and got that good stuff off him. Then I got two big ones."

Tim dangled a flying fish off the kite to bag his winner. He said he fished with a 12/0 Mustad 7691 hook, 130-pound Line One Spectra, and an Accurate 50 W reel. Tim posed with the trip???s two largest fish; his "small" one weighed 187.4 pounds.

Jack Nilsen's second-place tuna weighed 171 pounds. He got it after a 35-minute tussle on the little reel, with a sardine on a 6/0 ringed gorilla hook, 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon, 80-pound AccuBraid Spectra, his new B-2 50 Accurate reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.

Rudy Vantine of Santa Barbara won third place for a 169.4-pounder. He said he fished a double sardine rig on the kite, with 8/0 Eagle Claw circle hooks, 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra, a Sheets-modified Penn 70 reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. He got the fish in 20 minutes.

The trip's best wahoo was a 66-pounder taken by Phil Lisi of Costa Mesa. He said it was his best skinny ever, and that it bit a trolled black and purple Marauder.
