The reservoir is still covered in thick ice. Trout are hitting on PowerBait and night crawlers. Some anglers have even been able to pull a bass through the ice using jigs. For up-to-date ice conditions contact Spring Valley State Park at 775-962-5102.
Thin ice continues to cover much of the reservoir but is unsafe to walk on. There are some patches of open water, but anglers have found slow fishing. For up-to-date ice conditions contact Echo Canyon State Park at 775-962-5103.
Striped bass are taking live shad and anchovies from anglers at the Hemenway fishing pier. Anglers fishing in the early mornings and overnight are averaging more fish that daytime anglers. Boaters are having luck when trolling shad lures in about 40 feet of water. Black bass action is picking up around Callville Bay. The fish are coming up for bone-colored swimbaits and walking baits.
Trout swimbaits are the ticket for large stripers near Willow Beach, but anchovies and some shad lures are producing nice catches as well. Shore anglers and boaters are reporting the most action in the overnight hours. Rainbow trout are taking gold and red spinners and Power Eggs from the fishing pier. At the south end of the reservoir, anglers are targeting stripers in about 50 feet of water. A variety of shad-pattern swimbaits and crankbaits are being used.
Swimbaits and Glide Baits in trout patterns are producing striped bass catches along the river. One lucky angler landed a 17-pound striper below Big Bend State Recreation Area using his favorite swimbait. Rainbow trout are most active in the mornings and afternoons. The fish are looking for pink and orange PowerBait, mice tails or worms fished in the shadows.
Ice conditions remain questionable. Recent weather conditions have made it difficult to fish from shore or to launch a boat. The Nevada Department of Wildlife encourages visitors to use extreme caution.
Recently-stocked rainbows are taking a variety of baits, lures, and flies. Meal worms, night crawlers, and rainbow PowerBait are usually productive. Rooster Tails and other spinners attract trout and a few bass in the afternoons. Hare’s Ear and Prince nymphs will generally fool the fish.
