Now is the time for shad fishing on the Sacramento River, according to Richard Peeples at the Tackle Box in Chico. "Shad fishing on the Sacramento is on fire!", said Peeples. "In an average afternoon you can expect to catch 18 to 20 shad. The catch is around 30-percent larger female fish up to four and one-half pounds. The standard red head/chartreuse tail is working best, and right out of Scotty's has been a very good spot.
Peeples continued, "Some nicer stripers up to 12 pounds are being caught up at Deer Creek on anchovies, and a few scattered catfish to five pounds are hitting on cut baits. Some sturgeon are still being seen rolling around, but none have been caught lately."
Sacramento River Shad Derby
The thirteenth annual Sacramento River Shad Derby will take place on June 13 at Scotty's Landing on the Sacramento River. Final weigh-in will be at 3:00 PM. Prizes will be awarded in several categories, including catch-and-release, ladies and juniors. Entry fee is $30, which includes a T-shirt and tri-tip dinner. Entrants may sign up in advance at Scotty's, or by calling the tournament director. Late sign-ups will be taken on June 13 starting at 8:00 AM. For tickets or more information, call 521-1032.

Good numbers of bass are still on tap at Lake Oroville, reported Fil Torres at Oroville Outdoors. "The sheer numbers of bass are over in the Middle Fork, but the larger fish are in the North fork and West Branch", said Torres. Most are around slot-size, but Dave Rush got a 17-incher in the Tuesday Night Tournament, and a 6.8 pound Florida-strain largemouth was caught last Saturday." Torres tipped, "Start out in 30 feet of water and work your way shallower.......
