CORVALLIS, Ore.—Beginning this week, the gate at ODFW's Green's Bridge property on the lower North Santiam near Jefferson will be locked. Only anglers with boat trailers will be able to park past the gate, and they must first request a key.
Anglers can call ODFW's Corvallis field office at (541) 757-4186 to get an application form. Applicants will need to include a current angling license number. The key will be good for the entire summer until the gate reopens in September. Once an application is approved, the key can be picked up at Clyde's Lock and Safe (236 State Street, Salem, 503- 363-7918). The cost for the key is $4.
The Green's Bridge property was donated to ODFW for angler use, but is popular with many who don't fish but swim, picnic or float the river, especially during the summer. To preserve the fishing opportunity, ODFW only allows anglers hauling boat trailers to go beyond the locked gate during the busy summer months.
Other users and anglers not hauling a boat may leave their vehicles at the parking lot on the outside of the gate and walk in to use the property during the summer.
All non-boaters should be aware that there are still obstructions in the river between Green's Bridge and Jefferson. It will be difficult for non-boaters (i.e. people using inner tubes, pool toys, etc.) to avoid these obstructions. ODFW strongly urges non-boaters to not float the river from Green's Bridge to Jefferson until water levels drop sufficiently that these obstacles can be avoided. Further information regarding the obstructions is available at https://www.oregon.gov/osmb/Pages/Reported-Obstructions-Alerts.aspx.
