Fishing at the Lava Lakes has been a bit off. There have been rumors of a possible fish kill. The heat hasn’t done anything to help the fishing. Surface action will probably be unproductive. Terrestrial or callibaetis patterns may be productive very early or very late in the day, but it’s unlikely that fish will want to rise often. Damselfly nymphs are productive in hotter conditions. Callibaetis, chironomids and dark assassins are decent choices. Balanced leeches always have potential. Leeches and streamers stripped on a sinking line can work well, fish them deeper than you normally would. I wouldn’t fish during the middle or the day, it’s not worth it. Be prepared for the heat when you go out fishing, dehydration and heat exhaustion can sneak up on you very fast. We created a blog post discussing how to keep yourself and the fish you catch safe and healthy during the extreme temperatures.
