Is This Season Ready to Bust Open?
This has been a crazy season. Moments of greatness and times of just poor fishing, but are things ready to change for the better? Most experts are thinking that could be the case. Better weather this week really helped the local and long range bite.
Long range fishing from San Diego has certainly been the most consistent producer. Our 3 day Shimano/Let's Talk Hook-up on the water seminar had great weather and good fishing for smaller grade fish. See the report on our web site

The 4 day plus trips are still experiencing success on yellowfin tuna and yellowtail at Guadalupe Island. If you are booked on one of these trips this month or next, be ready for great action on quality fish.
The 1 1/2 day boats are posting consistent counts of bluefin, yellowfin, yellowtail and dorado. The San Diego one day fleet has had it a little tougher. One day they post a great score of bluefin tuna to 45 pounds, the next day just a handful. Private boater fishing locally have seen a plunker bite on bluefin tuna along with lucky paddy yellowtail to 30 pounds. Very few paddies are holding, so you may have to check several to score. One tip I heard for success in fishing the bluefin tuna- the Shimano butterfly jig. The tuna have been reluctant to bite live bait, but seem to want the jig. The area southwest of the Butterfly Bank- about 50 miles from Point Loma has been a hot area. As usual, check for the latest conditions at

The Coronado Islands yellowtail bite that was so good last weekend tapered off, but there is still yellowtail at all the islands along with fantastic bonito fishing. La Jolla has also seen good yellowtail and bonito action. Dana Point yellowtail fishing has slowed a bit, but hopefully will take off again. Huntington Flats are loaded with barracuda and sandbass, but getting through the mackerel has been the challenge. Still good large yellowtail at San Clement Island, if you can get live squid from the LA receivers or Catalina.
