Spring Chinook fishing is currently open on the Hood River. The Chinook fishery opened April 15 and will be open through June 30 the mouth to mainstem confluence with the East Fork, and the West Fork from the confluence with the mainstem upstream to the angling deadline 200 feet downstream of Punchbowl Falls. The catch limit is one adult hatchery salmon per day and five hatchery jack salmon per day. PIT-tag numbers over Bonneville indicate the 2022 Hood River spring Chinook run will be stronger than last year.
Hood River-origin winter steelhead are still observed passing over Bonneville Dam as of this week, meaning there are still Hood River hatchery steelhead low in the system. However, many fish have already passed above the fishery. Three hatchery steelhead may be harvested daily (2 daily adult salmonid bag limit, plus 1 additional steelhead for total aggregate of 3 adult fish) hatchery steelhead may be harvested per day.
Flows were high on the Hood River over the weekend, limiting angling opportunities. Flows are forecasted to subside through this week.
