TROUT/KOKANEE
Kokanee are lighting it up on New Melones with anglers bringing in plenty of limits. Trolling at 1.5 mph seems to be a good speed, and the Kokanee are biting on lots of different setups, no need to get particular with your setup but now is the time using orange, pink, chartreus or a combo of the latter will do the trick. We have plenty of Kokanee gear in stock, Silver Skalez Koko Leaf, Rocky Mt. Tackle squid, spinners and hoochies, Kokanee Creek hoochies and squid, T-Bone Tackle’s Pickle lures and spinners, R&K Spinners (RIP Robbie), Mag Tackle spinner hoochies along with dodgers and flashers from all the vendors. Don Page and Ron Fernandes of Ione had a good day fishing Kokanee. They were using T-Bone Tackle Pickle Lures and Dodgers In orange and green colors by the spillway. They were fishing 40 ft deep. Anglers are also coming up with some nice holdover trout while trolling Kokanee
BASS
Bass bite continues to be good on Melones, and anglers are beginning to see shad being chased along the surface. Topwater action with chatterbaits, spooks, spinnerbaits, River2Sea whopper ploppers are producing some good action. For non stop action shakey heads with a green pumpkin/red flake, watermelon/blk flake is always a go to.
CATFISH
Catfish are starting to get active using cut baits, night crawlers, and minnows. One 9.5 lb cat was landed by a guy fishing crappie with live minnows.
CRAPPIE
Anglers searching for crappie are finding them near structure. Look for submerged trees and ones coming out of the water. Best bait for crappie will be live minnows, but you may be sharing that minnow with hungry bass.
