WHAT BAIT TO USE!!

Stripers - Anchovies, Sardines

Catfish - Chicken Liver, Anchovies, Sardines and Night Crawlers. Catfish tend to not be interested in any lures.

Trout - Power bait, Night Crawlers, have been working well. Trout also love lures such as Panther Martins, Kastmaster, Rooster Tails, and all types of small Spinners, Atomic Tubes

Largemouth/ Smallmouth - Plastic Worms have been a good choice, another good choice is Jigs or Drop Shots, various spinners

Crappie/Panfish - Night Crawlers, Redworms, and little Micro Jigs have been working good as well.

Don’t forget that to fish at Lake Del Valle, everyone ages 16 and older must have a Lake Del Valle Fishing permit and a California Fishing License. The Lake Del Valle permit is $5.00 per day. They can be purchased at either the entry kiosk or the Marina/Bait Store. The California Fishing License is $17.54 per day or $54.00 per year for a Resident of California. The California Fishing License can be purchased at the Marina/Bait Store. Also, a reminder after all fish plants please make sure you wait 2 hours before fishing the plant.

We did not get a report out before Memorial Day, and we are catching up now! Not many folks
coming in to tell us about catches, but we got the following report from Dr Al! -

A very tough day on 5/26/2022 for Paul Clouse of Lafayette, Al Hurwitz of Saratoga, and Abbey
Lev of Sunnyvale. We were trolling the lake mainly for Smallmouth Bass and fished the entire
lake with Panther Martin Spinners and Jointed Rapalas. The lures were trolled 8-20 feet below
the surface. The fish were noted on the sonar, mainly on the western shoreline of the lake, and
were located around 15-20 feet below the surface. However, there were no bites! We applied
Shad, Crawfish, and Anchovy scents to the lures, but could not entice the fish to hit the lures.
It was a nice day, although quite windy in the afternoon. Water clarity was good with a
surface temperature of 70-73 degrees Fahrenheit.

I do not have a good explanation for the poor trolling bite. It could have been due to adverse
pH or salinity of the water. One shoreline fisherman caught two Rainbow Trout weighing 8 and
12 pounds. I do not know the location of his catches, but this success suggests that the
Rainbows are still out there to be caught on spinners.

Thanks to the staff for their courtesy and help with our day of fishing. We hope for better
success in the future.

All the best, Dr. Al Hurwitz
