Weather Report from Local Mammoth Forecaster
Again, our local weather forecaster Howard Sheckter said "the model shows a pattern that will import monsoon moisture for a very humid heat wave for Southern California and thus a higher possibility of thunderstorms for the high country later next week. The European models show a dryer and hotter pattern than the American models; we are talking the upper 80s to near 90 degrees in Mammoth, should the European model work out. This heat event began on the 7th and goes through about July 30th," he said. "Incidentally, this is the climatologically hottest period of the year with the 10th of July being Bishop's hottest day on record, with a temperature of 110 degrees set back in 2002.

BAIT: Garlic Powerbait with trout dip, worms, then, micetails and pinched crawlers but worms were holding their own.

LURES: Red/gold Buoyant - the top lure, rainbow Buoyant 1/6th, small 1/8th gold Kastmaster, CT Kastmaster, black/yellow dots Panther Martin, Silver Super Duper 501, Silver/blue Kastmaster and small gold spoons.

FLY AND BUBBLE: Green body mosquitoes, olive elk hair caddis, black elk hair caddis, Black Gnat red tail, Griffith's Gnat, Adams female, Grey Hackle yellow, and red top ant or hard body ant. Hoppers have started to show up.

FLY RODS: Streamers, Matuka's, and emergers. New hatches lately have been dark mayflies (duns), black caddis, with midges still overwhelming the area.. Also try the X-Caddis without a dropper, even some flash tri-color buggers, and crystal flashes. Bring it all, close your eyes and pick something. Tie it on and you'll probably do well. You will not have a problem catching.

BACKCOUNTRY: Same report as last week  - FLIES have been hitting at Cooney and Frogs but all very small. Bring Repellent, mosquitoes are merciless and drilling deep. Take standard dries and pinch your barbs and let 'em live to hit another fly. Blue is also doing good at the inlet and along the corner toward the trail. Small mosquitoes, black gnat/red tail, Adams parachute and Griffith's Gnat, all size 16 or 18.
