Since our back to 30's we've been back to normal temps for the late summer. A few drops of rain from thunderstorms the last 2 days. The trout most certainly responded even though there's very little change in water temps throughout the water column. The trout moved up the water column for us. We've scouted our late August spots & right on time we found some good action. Top lines & trolling flies at 4-6ft deep to about 12ft deep (2 1/2-colors of leadcore) on small (1/6oz) gold Thomas Buoyant for us. Hot Orange Jay Fair trolling flies in 8-11ft to 32-45ft of water caught the most and had the most strikes. The deepest fish this week was 15ft. We worked from Pike's Pt to the old Aspen ramp right out of the buoys making a few passes today. Limits were pretty easy if ya kept the topline out about 150ft behind the boat. But, besides the battle coming in & a couple tugs at the boat the trout were exhausted at the net. We have found fish off lake of the woods to the north side drop off at shrimp island as well working structure to 25-40ft of water. Tui chub minnow fly worked as well as orange up there. The water temps remain in the 70's pretty much to 35ft deep. It's about the oxygen levels for the active trout.
Water column temps. 2 locations: Eagle’s Nest area 75ft of water: 71.6F@5ft to 70.2F@35ft. 66.8F@40, 65.5F@45ft, 65F@50ft, 64.3F@55ft to 75ft. Basically a 6F difference in temp from surface to 75ft.
2nd (normal) location Straight out from ramp in 46ft of water: 71.7F from surface to 10ft
72.1F@15ft, 72.3F@20, 72.0F@25ft, 71.7F@30ft, 69.9F@35ft, 66.8F@40ft, 64.1F@45ft
Ramp is getting very interesting. We got in and got out, very carefully. The steepness of the drop after the rocks did get my trailer to scrape just a tad going in the water this morning. Lifted my truck up 1.6" & was ok. Going down in HI lift mode now. There's a cement anchor on the shoal right in the boat lane that's got an eye on top of it. Watch out for that, 12" deep on top & 18-24" deep over the shoal in general. Too big for me to get out! 38" deep at the end of the dock, 8" deep at the end of the cement. Easy does it. Going to adjust (lift) my hitch a bit to buy more time. It's the first adjustments I've made to launch besides being one of several maintaining the rocks to reduce the 3-5" drop off the cement in places. I can only buy 2.6" with minor adjustments with my big boat to prevent dragging my trailer....again. Lol. 9 boats launched this morning
