Trout fishing can be good on the Wallowa River and will likely improve in the coming weeks as the weather cools a bit. A variety of hatches have occurred over the summer, and flies that imitate terrestrial insects like grasshoppers may be good options throughout the late summer. Casting spinners also may be a good way to catch trout in the Wallowa River.
Steelhead fishing will open on the Wallowa River on Sept. 1. Steelhead fishing will probably be slow to start but should improve later in the year. Anglers are reminded that wild steelhead, Chinook salmon, and bull trout cannot be harvested and must be released.
