While the flows are really low along the upper river from Lake Tahoe through the town of Truckee, the Little Truckee confluence below Boca Reservoir has remained around 300 CFS, keeping the canyon section flowing well. There is still a wide variety of bugs you can toss this time of year and just in the last week we’ve done well on stoneflies, worms, eggs, BWO’s, PMD’s, midges, crawdads, October caddis pupa as well as smaller caddis. As always, we emphasize a good drift with ample weight over an exact fly selection for best results on the Truckee.
Fish continue to hold in a variety of water types right now, so be sure to be thorough when fishing any given run and fish everything from the slow deep tail outs, riffles, and pocket water to whitewater. If you’ve fished a run with no success, take the time to adjust your weight and depth and fly selection of your set up, give the run a quick rest and try again. The fishing will be good most of the day at this point so don’t worry about getting those sun-up starts, however fishing through the evening can be advantageous as the fish will typically be a little more active during that last hour of light.
