The Little Truckee has seen a small decrease in flows over the last week and it is currently sitting at 90 CFS. For fall, this is still a fair amount of water, and the river is overall in good shape for October. The dry fly fishing has been somewhat inconsistent, but some exciting news here will be the emergence of October caddis, giving anglers a great option for dry dropper fishing, or even fishing the pupae under an indicator or tight line set up.
Like the main river, we should see this emergence continue for another few weeks, so stop in and load up on a few of these patterns in both dries and nymphs here in the shop. The other main bugs of note are BWO’s, midges, PMD’s, worms, eggs and still a handful of smaller caddis. Small is considered safe out here in terms of sizing and light tippet is considered a must.
While we have not yet seen or had any reports of spawning brown trout just yet, it could be any day now. If you have any questions as what to watch out for or what the best policy is when it comes to fishing during this time of year, please feel free to give us a call or stop in the shop and we are happy to explain!
