The lower deschutes is fishing very well. The flows are much lower than this time last year and that likely means the salmonfly hatch will come a bit sooner this year as the water is warming quicker. Fish are in close to the banks and taking stonefly nymphs well. Peacock jimmy legs, lex’s improved stones, and double bead peacock stones have been some of our favorites. In addition to stoneflies, pheasant tails, duracells, jigged leeches, squirmies, and two-bits have also been picking up fish. Throwing around a sculpin, crayfish, or leech streamer is effective and a very good way to really cover some water. Now is the time to start stocking up on big bugs that hatch is not far off!
