The Little Truckee has definitely come into shape this week and it’s about time! The current flows are holding at 230 CFS, which is right in that ideal range. This will make for good dry fly fishing as well as appease the nymph angler. With over a week of stable flows, the PMD’s have begun their yearly rhythm and can be found hatching most days mid-day. They run about a size 16 and fishing all life stages of this insect can be effective. We recommend fishing the split case PMD nymphs. Early in a hatch, the cripple or emerger stage can be deadly and often the bigger fish in the river really prefer them. After they have hatched, using the adults will typically be the most effective, and either late evening or early mornings, using spinners will match the final life stage of the bug. There have also been a handful of green drakes out here, and due to the colder water in this fishery, the hatch here can be a bit more delayed compared to the main river so there is a good chance of seeing these massive mayflies really pop soon. The fishing remains good all day here due to it being a tailwater, but if going out early in the morning or especially if going out in the evening, be aware that the mosquitos have been absolutely relentless and you will need to wear the right clothing or bring plenty of bug spray.
