Is matching the hatch more your speed? Then the Little Truckee may be right up your alley. These picky fish are not easily dupped, and probably haven’t gone for a size 14 red copper john since 1999. They want their flies to look and move naturally. This means you want to have a good assortment of the various life stages of the bugs present, they want them presented correctly, and preferably on light tippet to boot.

The Little Truckee has seen a small drop in flows again this week, currently sitting at 165 CFS. These are prime flows for this river, and as expected it is fishing very well. The dry fly fishing has been great as the PMD’s are hatching on a daily basis and usually for quite a few hours throughout the day. Even when the hatch isn’t happening, you can probably still find a few either on the adults or spinners. When the hatch is happening, be sure to fish emerger patterns, If you try throwing an adult during this time your success will be very limited. The caddis hatch in the evening has also been very consistent. The other bugs of note are green drakes, which usually show up a bit later than on the main river, baetis and midges. If all else fails, try a worm, they’re always around on this tailwater. A good drift and 6x tippet will be as equally important as your fly selection, and it’s only when you have the complete package that you can expect to find fish consistently here. As we head into the prime months of fishing out here, the crowds will also be at their peak so be friendly; cycle through spots to allow other anglers to try their luck on the run you’re fishing; have patience for others; and consider fishing during off hours like mid-week, early mornings or late evenings if possible.
