Metolius River is shaping up to be a prime fall destination with excellent fishing conditions across the board. Nymphing is the top technique right now. Try a double nymph rig with a golden stone or October caddis as the lead fly, and pair it with a smaller mayfly or caddis pattern. Be prepared for an array of hatches—caddis, BWOs, PMDs, and rusty spinners, which provide some excellent late afternoon action. For caddis, tan, green, and gray elk hair or X2 Caddis in sizes 14-16 are the way to go. Flavs are still active, so keep #14-#16 patterns ready for midday and into the afternoon. PMDs, BWOs, and Mahogany Duns can hatch throughout the day depending on the river’s temperature, so stay adaptable. Bull trout are taking large streamers, while swinging leeches or sculpin patterns can also entice big rainbows. Kokanee are just starting to run from how it sounds so expect fishing for other species to heat up. With varied hatches and great nymphing opportunities, the Metolius is fishing well all around. Don’t miss out on some stellar fall action!
