We stand by what we said last week, November is the new March! If you’re after a Pyramid Lake trophy, then you should be heading out here ASAP! The number of large fish seen this already this year, let alone this week has been exceptional. Even better, the crowds that this lake has become known for have been relatively non-existent lately and give you some serious breathing room to move around the shoreline in search of that sweet spot.
The bite out here has been mostly consistent but can be a little dependent on weather right now. With the best fishing found on mild stormy days, with moderate wind. Too much wind is no good. A very consistent bite can be found on overcast days with light wind and steady air pressure. The incoming full moon will likely slow things down a bit this weekend, but by the middle of next week, we should see the fishing kick right back into gear. The strip bite and indicator bite remain neck and neck this week and it’s nice to be able to have a choice on how you catch them right now.
Beetles, boobies and buggers are still the staples for stripping, but we’ve continued to do well on some larger streamer patterns imitating tui chubs, cui-uis or juvenile trout. The indicator bite has been almost exclusively leeches, with the darker shades continuing to produce with the most consistency. When the sun pops out however, don’t forget to mix in some olives, whites or other “poppy” colors. The average depth of the fish depends on the beach, but a good place to start would be 8-10 feet right now, adjusting as shallow as 6 or as deep as 14 when necessary.
The other nice thing about this time of year is that fishing is good along a number of beaches, further spreading out the already light angling pressure. So, bopping around a few beaches throughout the day right now may provide a positive change in the fishing conditions that may improve the bite on any given day. Although only time will tell as we head into winter and spring, we are not exaggerating when we say the ‘24/’25 Pyramid fishing season is shaping up to be one of the best ever - we encourage you to capitalize on having this world class fishery close to home!
