Solid Action on the Metolius

The Metolius is deep into mid-summer form and delivering solid action right now. Green Drakes are completely behind us, but the afternoons and evenings remain prime time with PMDs, Caddis, Little Olive Stones, Golden Stones, and a light BWO presence putting fish up. If you're targeting rising trout, focus on runs and pocket water shaded by pine or billiard-ball boulders.

Dry-dropper rigs are working exceptionally well—an Elk Hair Caddis, X-Caddis, or Purple Haze topped with a Nitro Caddis Pupa or Jig PMD nymph is a clean, effective setup. If you’re in the mood to fish subsurface only, Euro-style and indicator rigs loaded with Jigged Frenchies, Purple Perdigons, Berry’s PCPs, Green Drake nymphs, and Zebra Midges continue to produce solid hook-ups. This is classic Metolius fishing: targeted presentations, quality water, and a mix of hatch-driven and sight fishing opportunities.

Evenings can still turn up bull trout—small, weighted streamers swung through canyon water or undercut boulder zones are still putting bigger fish in the net. The week ahead looks hot, but mornings are cool, and evenings remain fishable. Keep your presentations drag-free, your tippet long, and your dry/dropper combos on standby—this is one of the strongest weeks we've had on the Metolius this summer.
