When the word on the water hit that Captains Norm Kagawa and Bruce Smith and the Shogun crew would be running overnight trips out of Fisherman's Landing targeting yellowtail at the Coronado Islands I couldn't pass up the opportunity to jump on board this legendary vessel and fish with the crew. State rooms, sun deck, super wide and cusioned decks, loads of fishing room, Barbeque Bill behind the grill and island yellows on the chew, I thought I was up in long range fishing heaven. The entire motley crew of anglers aboard realized the unique opportunity that they were about to experience fishing aboard the Shogun before they start their long range season. A short run to the Coronado Islands meant plenty of fishing time for the 28 eager and enthusiastic anglers aboard and we fished hard for the duration. Big bonito and a scattering of barracuda and bottom dwellers kept us busy for the morning hours as Captain Kagawa moved us around to various spots around the islands. It was looking like the yellows might give us the slip as the day was slipping by with no 'tails on the board. That changed very quickly when Captain Kagawa put us on a spot off the North Island at around 3:30 and the yellows hit us hard and fast as several fish were hooked and landed on sardines. With an experienced group of iron tossers aboard it wasn't long before the the iron started producing big time as nice 12-22 lb yellows started hammering the jigs. We landed 12-13 yellows in about 45 minutes highlighted by Gilbert Saucedos' monster jackpot yellow that he nailed on a blue and white Salas 6x. Great job Gilbert !!! We ended the day with 14 nice island yellowtail, 60 or so big bonito, a few baracuda and 30 or so bottom fish including one legal ling and alot of shorts. The surface action is really picking up around the Coronado Islands and the Shogun is online to run overnight trips all week before starting their long range season next week. Do not pass up this opportunity to fish with Captains Norm and Bruce aboard this incredible fishing vessel. Call Fishermans's landing at 1-619-221-8500. That's the word on the water Don. donpadick@hotmail.com for photos.
