BIG ALIJOS TUNA ARRIVES (101210)!!! Royal Polaris docked at Fisherman's Landing October 12 when skipper Billy Santiago Jr. backed the boat into slip to drop off 33 anglers on a Shimano 11-day trip. Chartermaster Rob Gant said the trip was a success. "Our new rod and reel got the big fish," he said, "and everyone had opportunity to fish the Butterfly jigs. We brought over 80 outfits aboard. We had a giant prototype WaxWing too, in white. The Wahoo loved it. It's a casting jig." Skipper Santiago said the water conditions and current were good at Alijos, with the temperature holding between 68.4 to 69.2 degrees. The big fish was the best Tuna to come from The Rocks in quite a spell, a 158.6-pounder caught with a squid on the kite by George Spellmire of LA. The kite method made it ineligible for the jackpot. The squid was on a big 7691 Mustad hook and a big circle, said George. The rig used 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Power Pro Spectra on a prototype Talica 50 two-speed reel and a prototype Terez rod. "I fought that fish for 45 minutes or an hour," said George. "I told 'em it was a shark, it was taking so long. I finally got him up in the port corner." Fred Adams, an RP regular, won first place for a 79.4-pound Yellowfin. He got it with a sardine on a 4/0 Eagle Claw hook tied to 50-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 50-pound blue Izorline, with 80-pound izor Spectra on a Shimano TLD 30 reel and a Calstar 665 H home-built custom rod. Ken Shaleen won second place for a 75.2-pound Tuna, and Phil Nguyen of Garden Grove won third place for a 72.8-pounder. There were numerous notable fish. The lineup shot featured Ken Shalleen with a 46-pound Wahoo he got on the troll with an orange marauder, a 63-pound Yellowtail for George Alfaro of Torrance taken on the 40-pound flyline, and first-place winner Fred Adams. Ken Yeun of San Jose didn't enter the jackpot. He caught a 101-pound Tuna.
