A QUICK BITE (120810)!!! Frank LoPreste's Royal Polaris arrived at Fisherman's Landing December 8 after a 12-day trip with 24 anglers that visited the outer southern waters. Fishing was very good, and most anglers aboard had all the Tuna they needed. One of those was Chrissie (nee Shedd) Maxa of AFTCO. "I had a great time," she told dock reporter Bill Roecker. "I got three to five Tuna every day we fished and they were from 80 to 150 pounds. I also got a Wahoo on the Marauder." Gary Cotter of Santa Barbara won the jackpot for his 259-pound Yellowfin. "My best before was a 250," he said. This one came on a quick bite, the first thing in the morning. He took me up to the bow and I finished him there. I had the right fishing reel for that, for sure." Cotter baited a sardine on a 6/0 Owner ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Accurate topless 50 reel and a Calstar 7465 XH rod to do the job in 50 minutes. Kathy Rounds of San Diego won second place for a 216-pounder. She said it bit on a salami mackerel pinned on a 9/0 Super Mutu. She used 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound izor Spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod. Her fish took 45 minutes and bit in the dark just before dawn. Bob Mains, a rookie from Vancouver WA won third place for a 215-pound Tuna. He fished a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu on 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra on one of the boat's rigs, and said he enjoyed his first long range trip. "No doubt I'll be back to do it again," he remarked.
