Andy Cates docked Red Rooster III at H&M Landing February 6 after a good trip that found biting tuna in southern waters. His group of 16 anglers took 14 tuna over 200 pounds, including on over 300 pounds. Rookie long ranger John Wells of Anaheim caught the monster, a 309-pound yellowfin, on a sardine and a 6/0 ringed Owner Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 90-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 100-pound Ande line on 130-pound spectra, with an Avet 30 reel and a Calstar 770 XH rod. He also had a 242-pounder. "My best tuna before was a 130-pounder," he told Roecker. Tom Jenkins of El Monte won second place for a 273-pounder he caught on a mackerel and an 8/0 ringed Super Mutu. He fished with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra on a TLD 50 W reel and a Seeker 6364 XXXH rod. The fight went one hour. Art Caballero of Temple City took a triple: 264, 250 and 229 pounds. The big one won him third place. He fished with sardines on 11/0 Mustad hooks. He used 130-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon, 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Penn 50 W reel and a Calstar 700 XXH rod. Rich Rose of Manhattan beach caught a 248-pound yellowfin with a mackerel on an 8/0 Mustad 7691 hook. He said he fished with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Penn 80 reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6463 XXXH rod. Fred Knilans of Rancho Santa Margarita got a 244-pound tuna with a double sardine rig under the kite. Fred is a rep for Catchy Tackle. He said he got his fish with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline spectra on a Penn 70 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod. Bob Michener of Oxnard got cow number 40, a 231-pounder, in 45 minutes. He said he fished a mackerel on a 13/0 Mustad circle hook, with 130-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline and Accurate spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar 770 XH rod. Sonny Jones of Santa Ana took 40 minutes to land his 220-pound tuna. He hooked it on a mackerel and an 8/0 Mustad 7699 hook tied to Momoi 130 fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra. He used a Penn 70 TSX reel, he said, and a Baja Boomer rod. Glenn Kerr of Costa Mesa only needed 35 minutes to beat his 219.8-pounder. He said he got it with a mackerel on a 9/0 Mustad 7691 hook, 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Penn 50 SW reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6463 XXXXH rod. Martin Gomez had tuna of 234.6 and 200 pounds. Bill Branstetter got one at 200.2 pounds. Hurricane Supercow Is Number Four While the Hurricane Bank puts out a lot of tuna and wahoo, it's not known for 300-pounders. Craig Drummond of Corona got the second one to come from the spot a year or two ago. Yesterday Bruce Helton had one on the Royal Star, and today, on February 6, Drummond brought in the second one he's caught on the bank, the fourth one ever. Drummond fishes on the Royal Polaris. After an 18-day Jerry Brown trip with 18 anglers, skipper Roy Rose backed the big boat in to Fisherman's Landing with 16 tuna over 200 pounds aboard, including Drummond's 314-pounder. Craig also had a 214-pound yellowfin. Craig said he got his supercow on a flying fish under the kite, on a 20/0 Mustad circle hook, with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Tiagra 80 W reel and a Calstar 760 H rod. "I'm the only guy with two from the bank," he said. "My other one was 318 pounds. This one fought for an hour and 35 minutes." Bob Garber of Orange won second place for a 272.3-pound tuna, his best fish ever. It bit on a mackerel, he said, pinned to a 16/0 Mustad circle hook on 130-pound Momoi fluorocarbon, 130-pound Momoi line and 130-pound Line One spectra. He used a Penn 80 W reel and a Calstar 6460 XXH rod. Bob Wolfson of Dana Pt. won third place for his 270-pounder. He got it in 40 minutes, he said, on a double sardine rig under the kite, with 7/0 Super Mutu Owner hooks and 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon tied to130-pound Line One spectra. He fished with a Cal Sheets-treated Penn 50 TW reel and a Broomstick rod. Jim Tallerico stood in with the winners holding his 268-pounder, the best baitfish of the trip. He got it in 45 minutes, he said, after baiting it with a mackerel on an 8/0 Mustad 7691 hook. He fished with 130-pound Momoi fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Penn 50 VSW reel and a Calstar 760 H rod. David Fay of LA took a 265 and a 220-pounder. He baited sardines on 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 100-popund Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra on an Avet 30 reel and a Calstar 6465 XH rod. Jim Nailen of Los Osos tripped up a triple weighing 258, 245 and 205 pounds, with sardines on 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hooks. He said he used 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One spectra on a Penn 50 reel modified by Cofe, and a Calstar 7465 XH rod. He got the big one in 30 minutes. Joe Amagrande of Monrovia bagged a brace at 247 and 226 pounds. He got 'em with sardines on 6/0 Super Mutu hooks on 130-pound Momoi and 130-pound Line One spectra on an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 7460 XH rod. Steve Oba of Brea found a 239-pounder with a flying fish under the kite. The fight lasted 30 minutes, he said. He used a 20/0 Mustad circle hook, 130-pound Line One spectra, a Tiagra 50 W reel and a Calstar 6460 XXGH rod. Charlie Foquette of El Cajon got his best one ever, a 231-pound tuna, on a mackerel and a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He fished with130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra, a Daiwa 50 T by Cofe, and a seven-foot GRUSA rod. Don Burnside of San Diego whipped his 209-pounder in 11 minutes, he said, after it bit on a mackerel and an 11/0 Mustad Demon hook. He used 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra, an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod. Brian Boatman of Morro Bay caught a 207-pounder with a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He fished with 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon, 130-pound Line One spectra, a Penn 50 reel by Cofe and a Calstar 7465 XH rod, to beat the fish in an hour.
