Shogun finished up a five-day Blackwater trip with skipper Norm Kagawa June 27. There were 27 anglers aboard. Norman said, "We spent two days offshore pursuing bluefin and two days at Cedros Island after yellowtail. We're sponsored by Gamakatsu hooks now."

Matt Whieldon of Orange won first place for a 40.9-pound yellowtail he bagged with a sardine on a 2/0 Owner Flyliner hook on 25-pound Big Game line. He used a Trinidad 20 reel and a Calstar 800 L rod.

Another big goldspotted sand bass was caught by Kenny Sanson of San Diego, on a five and a half-inch Big Hammer swimbait in Bleeding Mackerel with a  ?-ounce head. The fish was released, said relief skipper Bruce Smith, because it appeared to be a hybrid between a calico bass and a goldspotted sand bass.
