Get on the river early and enjoy yourself through 2:00 PM. Rainbows are holding tight to the bottom of the river. You have to place the fly in front of their noses just to get a look. Still, this is a great river to cast a fly rod on! Look for sparse hatches of PMD's by 9:30 AM and some caddis at sunset. Anglers fishing the Power House #2 riffle are hooking up throwing #18 Copper Johns, #18 Black Zebra Midges, Micro Poopahs in olive and black. Dries like Parachute Adams in #16-20, Mercer's Missing Link #16-18, CDC Callibaetis can trick a rainbow or three mid day in the flats below the Power House. Fish this river near sunset with an olive or black leech tied on a #8 hook.
The Fly Shop's ? Tips:
Cast Thing From Uranus Stonefly under overhanging branches and along logs, downed trees laying in he river. For a fun challenge, try catching Hat Creek trout on as many tactics as you can: small indicators with nymphs, swinging wet flies and/or streamers, and, of course, with a well-presented dry fly. The Powerhouse #2 Riffle is one of the best spots on the creek, but also one of the most popular. Anglers seeking a real challenge should sight-cast to trout in the fabled "carbon flats" section, and those looking for solace can hike into the freestone section just above Lake Britton. 5 wt. rods are perfect. Have an extra spool loaded with a Scientific Anglers Wet Tip Clear Fly Line.
