http://www.fishingvideos.comAmerican Angler returned to Pt. Loma Sportfishing October 20 after a good Penn Fishing University trip of eight days with chartermaster Steve Carson (who managed a 46-pound yellowfin) and skipper Sam Patella leading a group of 24 anglers. Limits of yellowtail were had on The Ridge along with a catch of bluefin and yellowfin tuna. The bluefin have been there for a week or two, and are remarkable to find in 74-degree water. Also unusual were a couple days of fog there.
The trip's first-place winner was skipper Craig Shaffer of Orlando, FL, who operates the Orlando Princess out of Port Canaveral and hadn't fished long range before.
"It's a little different," he told dock reporter Bill Roecker, "but I picked up on it pretty quick. It was an awesome trip." He added that he liked the long range style and would be coming back again. Shaffer's winner was a 52.4-pound yellowfin. He said it bit a sardine on a 2/0 Mustad hook and 30-pound Izorline. The fight went 20 minutes. He used 60-pound Izorline spectra on an Avet MX reel and a Calstar 700 M rod. He won a Penn 12 VSX reel.
Gary McKenzie of South Lake Tahoe won second place for a 36-pound yellowfin tuna, and took home a Penn Fathom 25 N reel. Richard Garcia of Seattle, WA won third place for a 34-pound yellowtail he got with a Salas 6X Jr. jig in blue and white. He won a Penn Baja Special.
