What started as a slow season, has gained momentum with great catches reported daily for anglers fishing out of San Diego. The season has all the earmarks of one that will last well into the fall as warm water continues to push northward bring more opportunity for anglers daily. 1.5 day trips and longer continue to dominate, however there remains plenty of opportunity for those choosing to go on a 1 day trips.

In addition to catching all species of tuna, kelp patty fishing has been kicking out great catches of Dorado and Yellowtail.

Some of the schools of Bluefin Tuna have fish in excess of 100 lbs. On a recent trip anglers onboard the Ranger 85 were in a stop for over 8 hours battling the blue bruisers, landing 15 fish over 100lbs. On any given trip anglers have the opportunity to test their tackle and ability to the limit...this something we have not seen in several seasons.

What makes this type of season special is that typically one has to go a trip of 5 days duration or more to have the opportunity to engage these larger blues.

This is one of those seasons where a 1.5 Day Trip affords you the opportunity without the huge time commitment.

It's also a great time if you're just thinking about trying the sport of fishing for the first time. In addition to the larger Blues, there are school size Yellowfin as well as Bluefin to get your feet wet. Once you do battle with one of these, you'll want to return time and time again for the chance to fight these challenging species.

The coming weeks hold great promise and I'm sure phoenominal fish counts as fall tends to be the nicest weather when it comes to offshore fishing.
