Red Rooster III decks 15 Cows on their annual Accurate 13/10 Fly-back trip

Skipper Andy "The Kid" Cates brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing November 21 after the annual Accurate 13/10-day fly-back optional trip with chartermaster Jack Nilsen. "It was a great trip," said "Accurate Jack," who described it further as requiring "...talent fishing, lots of time at the rail for success while drift fishing for cows. We got 15 of those. "Cabo San Lucas is good lately, too," he added. "We stayed a couple of days and heard fishing was good off the lighthouse."

Charlie Martinez of Lakewood, CO won first place for a husky 267-pound yellowfin tuna he took with a sardine on a 4/0 Mustad Demon hook and 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon. He said he fished with 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate 30 reel in blue camo and a Calstar 770 XH rod.

Tom Allen of Anchorage, AK won second place for a 261-pounder that fought him for 45 minutes. It bit on a salami mackerel pinned on a 10/0 Mustad 7691 hook and 130-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon backed with 130-pound Line One spectra. He used an Accurate ATD 50 W reel and a Calstar 765 XXXH rod.

Ernie Osuna of San Juan Capistrano won third place for a 255.2-pound tuna. He said it ate his mackerel on a 7/0 Mustad Demon Perfect Circle hook tied to 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline spectra. His reel was an Accurate 50 on a Calstar 765 XH rod.

The trolling jackpot was won by Dave Brilhante of San Diego for a 170-pound tuna. He posed with the winners in a lineup shot. Steve Larson had a 236-pound yellowfin tuna. Mike Totter of San Diego found a 203 and a 234-pound tuna. He fished sardines on 6/0 Mustad Demon hooks and 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon. He used 100-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate ATD 30 and a Calstar 770 XH rod.

Laurens Rhinelander of San Diego caught a 203 and a 232-pound yellowfin. He said he got those with mackerel on 10/0 Mustad 7691 hooks and 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon. He used 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 770 XXXH rod by Ken Bush.

Donna Manuszak of Madera got a 227-pound tuna with a sardine on a 6/0 Owner Super Mutu hook on 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon and 130-pound Izorline spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a five and a half-foot Seeker rod from Melton's.

Nick Rekrut of Mission Hills bagged a brace at 215 and 220 pounds. He said they bit sardines on 5/0 Owner Gorilla hooks tied to 100-pound Seaguar Premier and 130-pound Line One spectra. He fished a Makira 20 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.

Gary Ryan of Sekin, WA caught his first cow, a 202-pounder, with a sardine on a 6/0 Mustad Demon hook and 130-pound Seaguar Premier fluorocarbon connected to 130-pound Accurate spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 770 XH rod.

Chris Mohr of Sekin bagged a 211-pounder with the same outfit his pal Ryan used. John Keeler of Santa Monica, a long-time long ranger, fished up a 209-pound tuna with a sardine on a 7/0 Owner Offshore hook tied to 100-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon and 130-pound spectra on his Avet 30 W reel and a Super Seeker 2 X 4 rod.

Dr. Miles Yamaguchi of Riverside spent 40 minutes reeling in a 201-pound tuna that bit his salami mackerel on a 9/0 Mustad hook tied to 130-pound Yo-Zuri and 130-pound Line One spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 770 XXH rod.
