California Whale watching off of Point Loma is the best it’s been in years!
Sea Adventure 80 is running whale watching from H&M Landing and the sights off of Point Loma have been fantastic.
We leave San Diego from H&M Landing at 10: am daily. As we depart, the first thing we see is the commercial basin. The basin is filled with lots of yachts and commercial boats. It is also the home of the world’s largest sport fishing fleet. Nowhere else in the world can you find this amount of deep sea passenger boats. Next we enter into San Diego’s main harbor, where we see if we have a flood or ebb tide. We can see the water and tidal current moving on the green turning buoy and the yachts anchored on mooring buoys at Shelter Island.
On the way out we get a glance at North Island Naval Air Base on our port side and more of Shelter Island on the Starboard side.
After about 10 minutes we arrive at the bait docks. This is a favorite spot for getting great photos of marine birds like Cormorants, Pelicans, Egrets, King Blue Herons and many others. Sometimes the bait receivers are covered families of Sea Lions.
We make a quick pass by the Submarine base and Coast Guard Dock near Ballast Point. Before we know it we are looking at both new and old Point Loma Light houses. The reef out in front of Point Loma is known as “Ralph’s” a favorite surfing spot and it’s easy to see why, the surf always has excellent form.
Staying in the channel on our way out the channel, we just miss Point Loma’s gigantic Kelp Forest. This kelp forest is home to Lobster, Crabs, Kelp Bass, Barracuda, Sheephead, and 1000’s of Sea Birds.
The large kelp forest is visited by divers, fishermen, sail boats and power boaters alike.
We cruise by the San Diego Sea Buoy #1 and in minutes we see our first blow of a California Gray whale….make sure to bring your cameras because we are going to start a long photo session!
We are blessed with our geographic spot on the migration of the Gray whales. Point Loma goes out into the ocean a long way and the whales come very close to shore, sometimes right down the kelp line and in-between sea buoy #1 and Point Loma. We see mother Grays and calves together, groups of whales with mixed adults and youngsters born the previous year.
Dolphin is another fantastic treat to see, sometimes a few at a time and sometimes 100’s at a time. Once in a while the dolphins are very easy to see a long ways away while they work a bird school. Bird schools are diving on bait fish that the dolphins chase to the surface. Another gift from nature is when dolphin interact with the whales. Wow this can be fantastic, sometimes the whales start acting like dolphins and start jumping out of the water and rolling on their sides. This type of activity makes for photos of a lifetime!
