The Henry's Fork RxR section opens this Saturday and with it we will see fine PMD and caddis fishing. See you there! I'll be prepared with our PMD Foam Nymphs and Emergers in #16-18, PMD Improved Sparkle Duns in #18 and Iris and X2 Caddis #16-18. You can expect to catch a few very large rainbows with these flies!

The Madison in the Park is fishing well when PMD's emerge on overcast days from noon to 3pm. On bright days look for good PMD spinner falls to bring up good browns and rainbows from 8 to 11am. Caddis will furnish some very good evening fishing when they emerge from 8 to 9pm. Best flies are PMD Sparkle Duns and HI Viz Spinners in #18's along with White Miller X and tan X2 #16 and Iris in tan #17 and White Miller Iris #18.

The same can hold for the Firehole as with the Madison with one important exception. On the Firehole you will see Glossosoma sp. caddis and when you do you'd better have a #20 Black X Caddis or you will not be prepared to fish this emergence which usually comes off by 8am and goes for a couple hours. After, and during that time, you will also have PMD spinner fall and a #16-18 Hi Viz Spinner fits the bill then. Look for PMD's to emerge around 10am or later and they have been the big PMD's, a full size #16 so have a sparkle dun. Yesterday Mauro took, and we have the proof in both video and still photos, a male brown over 24". It was taken exactly at the same rock he took a brown of the same size last June. It appears in the photo to be the same fish he caught last year. You will see this great trout here in our report to follow next week.

The Gibbon River may be our sleeper bet stream of the week. Golden stones and its miniature salmon fly, a separate species of the giant stones, are emerging now and the fish are on them in the canyon below the falls. Upstream, in the meadows, be prepared with PMD's and caddis. Brown and gray drakes should come this week and on the lower meadow above Madison Junction you may have green drakes.

The Gallatin River in the park has fished strong with big dry fly attractors and rubber legs. Hatches are imminent but not before the water temps warm in the next 2 weeks.

The Madison is fishing now during the first evening caddis emergences of the season. While there are still strong BWO's on wet days PMD's are ready to emerge and will take the place of Baetis this week as our Spring Baetis emergences come to an end for the year.

The salmon fly hatch is nearing Ennis. Cam and I sampled the rocks near Big Bend last week and noted many big nymphs already at the shoreline in preparation for emergence. It looks like a good salmon fly season shaping up!

Evening caddis are emerging now near the West Fork and upstream to Raynolds. We have had good evening fishing with caddis the past 2 weeks even though we are just now seeing naturals. The fish want to feed on the surface and have been even though there have been few adults, until now!

If you have Amber and Tan Iris and X Caddis you are covered for evening caddis emergences and fish rising to them. During the day have the same bugs as well as nymphs like Krystal Dips with beads and #18 Mercer's Micro Mayfly Nymph in olive.

I will see you on the river! Give us a call if we can help and thanks for reading this week's report.

Fly selection is always a challenge on the 50 mile riffle, especially when picking a nymph. With a massive diversity of insect life, trying to figure out what a trout might be feeding on is often a crap-shoot. We jump on any clues the river might throw at us. Each spring, we notice large numbers of big, olive, mayfly nymphs. In fact, this spring it seemed like every time you climbed out of the river there were a dozen or more......

If you enjoy dry fly-fishing get here quick! I try and get out every afternoon and evening through the month of June and we are just now getting into some of the best dry-fly fishing of the year. Caddis, mayflies, stone flies and beetles are brining up big fish now on rivers like the Madison, Firehole and Henry's Fork. Let's get to this week's report so I can finish it up and get on the water! The Madison......
