It's been pretty darn quiet at the Lake for August - seems more like the end of September. We're keeping the Café opened on the weekends with our normal menu including homemade pie and homemade ice cream and the store opened during the week for cold drinks, snacks, ice and tackle.
We had another visit from our "friendly neighborhood bear" on Tuesday (seems he's on a week & a half visiting schedule) - the gut can was turned over and the freezer door was wide open when Rick got up. The bald eagles are still entertaining those taking a walk to the back of the Lake.
Fishing in deeper water (that would be behind what is normally the Island or taking a bit of a hike to at least the front of the back natural Lake) with NightCrawlers or PowerBait. Fishing the inlets with a fly and a bubble, NightCrawlers, PowerBait or Lures are getting limits. Got a good load of stockers from the Department of Fish and Game last Monday. They'll keep stocking as long as they can get to the water - not sure how much longer.
Had a couple of fish in the three pound range caught during the week - both on NightCrawlers - Lorna Remyn of Orange landed a 3-3/4 pounder while Lance Benson of Lucerne Valley pulled in a 3-1/4 pounder.
Well, we found out that big piece of equipment is to pull cables to tighten up the cement on the bridge making it a pre-tension bridge. They poured a brown curb and are now pouring the guard rails. Down at the construction supply area (at the North Lake road), there is a piece of the rock forms that they stained to blend into the area - this bridge is going to look pretty darn awesome by the time it's completed. That date for the bridge is still set for the end of September.
We did have a bit of the smoke from the Aspen fire in the canyon this week - when the wind blew from the north - right up the valley it came - when the wind shifted - back down the valley it went. It's still a tad bit on the smokey side - but that should be clearing up as the fire becomes more contained. This week's temps are expected to be in the low-50s for the lows and in the mid-70s for the highs. You can check NOAA's website at http://www.weather.gov and enter ASPENDELL, CA on the site and it will give you a fairly good hint at the weather up at the Lake or check in with Howard at www.MammothWeather.com.
Remember when using the bug juice and SANITIZER you need to really wash your hands before fishing - then rub some Salmon Egg juice, worm dirt or Anglers Bros Trout attractant to take that smell off. Also, remember your polarized dark glasses and sunscreen.
If you happen to come by and see a "CLOSED - GONE FISHIN" sign on the door (during the week), it's because we haven't had a car in the lot for at least an hour or two - hope you understand the closed sign - the fish are calling. Bryan will be here during the week periodically to give us a chance to get off the mountain.
